There’s something pretty special about getting married in Montana—the way the light filters through the pines, the glow of the setting sun on the peaks, and the sense of wildness you can still feel here.

I love working with couples who want their wedding photos to reflect not just the beauty of the of this special place, but also the deep connection they share together.

Glacier National Park isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a mood. In the summer, when the snow finally retreats from the high passes and the wildflowers take over the alpine meadows, there is nowhere more beautiful or romantic to say “I do.”

But peak season brings peak crowds. To make your elopement feel like a private sanctuary rather than a tourist attraction, strategy is everything.

Timing is Everything: The Golden Rule

In July and August, the sun stays up late and the park stays busy. To capture that ethereal Montana glow and avoid the midday congestion, you have two elite options:

  • The Glowing Start (Sunrise): If you’re willing to hike in the dark with headlamps, you’ll be rewarded with the “Pink Moment” on the peaks and the park all to yourself. It’s quiet, crisp, and deeply intimate.
  • The Golden Hour Finish (Late Afternoon/Sunset): Starting 2–3 hours before sunset offers the softest light for photos. Most tourists are heading back to their hotels for dinner, leaving the vistas open for your ceremony and some incredible views after.

Top 3 Ceremony Spots for a Summer Elopement

While Glacier has endless corners to explore, these three locations offer a perfect blend of accessibility and jaw-dropping views.

LocationVibeWhy We Love It
Ryan BeachSerene & ReflectiveLocated on Lake McDonald, this spot offers those iconic colorful pebbles and a massive view of the mountains reflecting in the water. It’s perfect for a “lakeside cathedral” feel.
7 Mile PulloutDramatic & AccessibleThis spot along the Going-to-the-Sun Road provides sweeping views of the valley and the high peaks. It’s ideal for couples who want high-alpine drama, and lake views without a 5-mile trek.
Sun PointEpic & WindyJust off the St. Mary Lake shore, Sun Point offers 360-degree views of the most rugged peaks in the park. It feels like standing at the edge of the world.

Quick Tips for Your Summer Elopement

  • Permits are Non-Negotiable: You’ll need a Special Use Permit for your ceremony. Apply early—Glacier is a popular venue!
  • The Park Fee: Remember that a visitor pass required year round for any park access. You can purchase your pass when you arrive.
  • Prepare for “Four Seasons” Weather: Even in August, a mountain breeze can turn chilly fast. Bring a stylish wrap or jacket to layer over your wedding attire. Also, while we love cute shoes, its best to bring a sturdy pair of sandals or hiking boots, sometimes we off-road a little bit!

Pro Tip: Keep it “Leave No Trace.” Glacier’s ecosystem is fragile. Stay on the trails and rocks to ensure this park stays beautiful for the couples who follow in your footsteps!

Hi friend! I'm Lexi, it's so nice to meet you! Not only am I from this beautiful place... I've also been photographing weddings in western Montana for over five years. Witnessing all of your love stories truly gives me the feels and fuels my passion.

When I'm not hanging out with couples in the mountains, I'm chasing after my two adventurous sons, picking huckleberries for jam, knitting nordic style gloves, and renovating our home in Kalispell with my wonderful husband.
